The BookLife Critic's Report

Plot/Idea: Out of Tune is D.C. Greschner's rollicking sci-fi novel about the intrepidly clueless Linda Pumpernickel, 65 years young, who must save the universe with an old pitch pipe. Preferably without dying. Is the universe doomed? Probably!

Prose: Greschner's prose is hilariously readable, and never more so than when taking the reader by surprise with an unexpected death.

Originality: Out of Tune is in a league of its own; the heroine is an elderly female retiree who befriends a larvalux, travels into space, and confronts aliens on strange planets; the villain is corporate greed, and trillions of lives hang in the balance.

Character/Execution: Linda is so lovable and loving, it's impossible not to root for her. And the author has surrounded her with a cast of characters who are all lovable/evil/just trying to get along. All have their own agendas and all come across as individuals with authentic problems. The result is a delightfully hilarious book stuffed with memorable characters that readers will adore.

A fresh, intelligent, and witty read from start to finish, and I expect to be recommending this quite a bit! Without spoilers, I'll say this had a cast of quirky and unforgettable characters that were a delight to follow through the events of the book. I appreciated the thoughtful science and frequent laughs. It will appeal to fans of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett or folks who enjoyed "Don't Look Up." I'm hoping they'll be a sequel eventually!'"

“Out of Tune is a highly entertaining read filled to the brim with fun, quirky, and loveable characters. While it does deal with the dire effects of climate change and corporate greed, it still manages to feel light and accessible. Bursting with imaginative creatures and a variety of colourful landscapes, it still is grounded enough to be relatable. I read it all in a couple of sittings. Would recommend for a humourous read that's full of heart."

“Out of Tune mixes a slew of themes that are dear to my heart. Environmentalism, alien species and cultures, diversity in its most extreme forms, rampant capitalism, corporate short-sightedness, aging, and yes, of course... music and singing. I loved the idea at first contact! Greschner's writing is packed with something I particularly enjoy. A tremendously high level of quirkiness, along with a highly incisive, targeted sense of humor. It’s always to the point, efficient in wrenching laughs out of me, but also, always hitting home to underline so many of the absurdities in our present-time existence. I have no qualms saying this would have Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett cracking a huge, approving grin."

I've been trying to find more great indie books, and this absolutely delivered. Flawless witty prose and great characters that kept me laughing throughout, with loveable characters. Would highly recommend to anyone who might like Good Omens or Hitchhikers Guide, and will be following this author carefully in the future."

This was a special book. Very creative, introducing new species and planets and spaceships with a strong plot and characters and their madcap motivations and decisions. In the tradition of the finest Sci-Fi, it shows us a mirror to ourselves (especially environmental) without forcing a direct gaze. Anyone who enjoys Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or Kurt Vonnegut will enjoy Out of Tune by D.C. Greschner."

Funny and engrossing, I looked forward to picking this book up every day to see what would happen next! This sci-fi adventure expertly weaves in biological and musical concepts. As someone who hasn’t been close to either in awhile I felt like I was getting smarter while being incredibly entertained. A very fun read that was over all too quickly.

“It is a very funny sci-fi adventure novel, and I loved the short chapters! I loved the sneaky nerdy music references and the scientific details throughout! This is the first book I'm completed in honestly two years (shout out to D.C. Greschner for writing such a good story), and I have my tentacles crossed in hopes of another book in the wormline!"

“A very fun read by a new author. Writing is reminiscent of Terry Pratchett, in my opinion. Definitely recommend if you like sci-fi comedy tackling environmentalism and rampant capitalism, with a fun cast of characters."

This sci-fi book was a page-turner filled with interesting concepts and compelling characters. The relations made throughout the book to real-life issues such as climate change were presented in an interesting and easy to digest way. Loved that the heroine was a woman in her 60's, making for both a unique and refreshing take on protaganists."

Andrew G.

“A zany, imaginative and hilarious lesson on the cosmos, its flora, fauna, cultures, and on 'musical theory.'"
